Families at Grace Community Church

At Grace we teach a biblical concept of family. It is important to be aware that the families that existed in the cultures of biblical times in both the old and new testaments are not models of God’s design for the family. A serious study of Jacob’s family as described in Genesis chapters 25-50 illustrates this well.

God’s word in the old and new testaments gives much instruction about His intentions for men and women, youth and children. At Grace we are unapologetic in proclaiming the truths handed down to us in scripture, regardless of confusions regarding gender and proper discipline of children that abound in our current culture.

In the various ongoing bible studies at Grace we sometimes teach groups that consist solely of men. Others are only women. Some groups combine both men and women. It depends upon our objectives for each group.

Men’s Fraternity:

Studies are aimed at teaching men to be spiritual leaders in Evangelism, Mission and Compassion Ministry. Men are equipped to be the spiritual heads of their homes and to fulfill their roles as husbands and fathers.

Women’s Bible Studies:

While equal to men in the sight and relationship to God, women have unique roles as helpmates to their husbands, nurturing of their children, establishment of households and connections with their extended families.

Men’s and Women’s Roles:

Women have a complementary function to men, not only in the home but in society as a whole. God has gifted men and women differently to fulfill their respective roles.

The women’s studies discuss these issues. Beth Moore is an author that is particularly popular with this group.

Both men and women have important roles in the family. We maintain that the Bible presents a consistent view of the parents’ responsibility toward children. They are to provide for a thoroughly Christian education for them. We teach parents to disciple their own children and we seek to equip parents to be faithful to this important task.

Youth

Our youth today have many challenges. Some have not been brought up in Christian homes and struggle to separate what they have heard about Jesus from the truth that the Bible presents.

Even those who have been brought up in Christian homes struggle to reconcile Jesus’ clear teaching in John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life” with the tide of multiculturalism that pervades our public schools. The end result of such thinking is that all ways to God are equally valid. We are warned in Proverbs 16:25: “There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”

Many children these days have so many activities crammed into there schedules that they struggle to “find time” for God and the church. High school students who are heavily involved in school, sports, or other community activities sometime face hostility when they ask to be excused from a meeting or sports practice session. Sometimes, when such a student does manage to break free to attend a church related activity they may feel that they don’t quite belong in the group that attends regularly.
